Lynn Ocone, Ocone Felt Art

Lynn Ocone is a Vermont artist who began working with fiber nearly thirty years ago. Her recent immersion in felt-making has focused her creative energy and provides tremendous pleasure in discovery.

Ocone’s current work explores the interaction of nearly sheer felt with light falling on and passing through the fibers. She fuses wool and open-weave silk in extremely fine, multiple layers. The inherent strength and malleability of wool, combined with the gossamer qualities of silk, allow for potent contrasts in drape, sheen, and texture. The simplicity of felt — with only fiber, water, and physical agitation at its core — appeals to Ocone, as does the satisfaction that comes from working directly with the media using only her hands. The layout of fibers is exacting, focused work, but it’s the unpredictable and unexpected outcomes of felt-making that fuel her fascination with the process.
