Joei Bassett

When I was young, my grandmother would take me to a fabric store and let me choose the material for a new skirt and yarn
for a sweater she would knit to match. She taught me to feel the fiber in all its variations. I have been addicted to
touching fibers since.

My home education teacher almost flunked me because I did not follow the pattern but changed the neckline, omitted the sleeves
and added ruffles where there were none.

When my grandfather gave me raw fleece from his sheep, I learned to spin and dye during the 60’s. It was a natural thing to do.
But I learned to felt by mistake. I boiled wool too hard in a dye pot and could not bear to throw it away. It became flowers
on a knitted sweater.

Felting allows my Don’t-Follow-The-Rules creativity to express itself in myriad ways like nothing else. My pieces have found
their way into small collections, through galleries and shows, as well as magazines.
